About Me

Milford Sound in New ZealandHelen Northcott, RPN, Bth, MA, Canadian Certified Counselor

Achieving good mental, physical and spiritual health is important to me because of my life experiences. In my last year of High School my parents divorced after a ten year separation.  I desired to be a legal secretary, but my interest in spirituality led me to a Christian school where I studied medical secretarial. This choice changed the direction of my life for the better because Christian living was healing to my soul and I established a new lifestyle. My interest in spirituality led me to study religion and I received a Bth and MA with a temperate living emphasis.

As a medical secretary I worked in mental health, and as a Registered Practical Nurse I dealt with teens cutting themselves, alcohol crisis in the home and elder abuse.  Knowing the damage addictive substances cause I studied addiction counseling. My awareness of problems stemming from family life led me to study family life education. I have certificates in both these areas and continue to attend numerous conventions and conferences. I enjoy learning about the function of the brain with its connections that influence the body. Substances deplete the body of vitamins and minerals so I encourage a change in diet to regain one's health along with psychotherapy. I just finished writing my cookbook entitled, "Vegetarian Cooking Today" which I think you will enjoy.

My concern and focus for children is their mental health so it is vital to identify parental alienation early to prevent mental illness. Today divorces and blended families affect children's emotions and abuse happens easily. I reassure my clients that emotions are sacred and I provide a safe place for them. I encourage redirection of angry emotions so that one's health can be maintained. Parents with good communication skills can establish a home environment that is emotionally healthy.

It has been my privilege to counsel individuals and families for many years and in 1998 I opened my business.  I have enjoyed teaching the benefits of a vegan lifestyle in the community. I now work with five (EAP) Employee Assistance Program providers and counsel individuals in every stage of life from childhood to old age.

I am a Canadian Certified Counsellor and a Registered Practical Nurse. Presently I am studying my doctorate in Christian counseling to better meet the needs of those I serve in the community.
